Description: One of Chevrolet's rarest, yet most desirable of the Tri-Five models is the Bel Air Nomad. A finely trimmed station wagon with the stylish sport design of the two door, long roof. With less than 8,000 Nomad wagons built in 1956, this makes for a scarce Chevrolet today.
This example was assembled at the Chevrolet Los Angeles California production facility. It was sold new in California where it resided until the late 70's. It was purchased by a Canadian working in California and was shipped back to Toronto. Due to work-family commitments the car was placed in climate controlled storage for the long awaited refurbishing. After for paying for 30 years of storage sadly the owner passed with the car in paid storage where it stayed for five more years before the family made the hard decision to sell. Purchased by a Classic Restoration professional it was quickly discovered to be an outstanding rock solid West coast example.
An outstanding all original panel California original sheet metal throughout. Stripped and refinished in its factory correct and original highly desirable colour combination of Twilight Turquoise over India Ivory. Finish is excellent, high quality smooth mirror like reflection throughout. There is a small metal imperfection on hood lip where header bar molding meets, please see detailed photo. All Brite work chrome and stainless was refinished to highest standards, including accessory front bumper guards and rear bumper end risers. Upon restoration it was decided to leave the undercarriage original, which still retains a portion of the factory original sound deadener while showing the original sheet metal you will see in detailed photos that the undercarriage was only painted black leaving portions of sound deadener along with original sheet metal. Lending to the condition and origanally. The photos also shoe original floor pans throughtout and original rocker panels.
Before the car left California a previous owner had the original motor changed to an early 1960's Chevrolet 327cid 250hp 4 barrel carburetor. Given that this was done previously, back in California we do not have any mechanical history on the motor. The transmission is the original two speed power glide. At time of refurbishment there was the addition of a Borgenson Power steering kit, a great addition to this car. Brand new gas tank was installed along with new fuel lines as well as brake lines throughout. With factory standard brakes this car stops very well, braking with ease and squarely. This Nomad starts with ease and drives very well. Brand new Coker Classic 15" radials with proper width white wall have been installed.
The interior has been fully and correctly restored back to original replacing all compotes and material with new back to correct and original materials colour and designs. Finished in correct Turquoise colours including all seats, door panels, correct carpets, rear cargo, headliner and Chevrolet embossed mats. Interior chrome and stainless shows excellent and was updated where necessary. The interior itself is a show stoppper. The factory AM radio and dash clock are currently non operable.
The car retains factory oriiginal glass incliding the windshield. The windshield seals does have a few expected abrasions, none of which would impede a safety inspection.
With a few miles since restoration, this Nomad shows extremely well. An excellent example that still boasts its original West Coast corrosion free sheet metal, an incredibly solid dry example. Outstanding finish in the factory correct best colours and those the car was sold new with, with new fully correct stunning and proper Turquoise interior. A very well presented example. A rare opportunity to secure a California built 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad.
